Aerolysin is activated by metalloprotease in Aeromonas veronii biovar sobria.

Aeromonas veronii is an opportunistic human pathogen that causes diarrhoea and extraintestinal infections, such as wound infection and septicaemia. An A. veronii protease (AVP) from a biovar sobria strain, AeG1, was partially purified and characterized. Mature AVP hydrolysed casein but not elastin, and protease activity was inhibited by metalloprotease inhibitors. Nucleotide sequence analysis s...

Caspase-1 inflammasomes in infection and inflammation.

Nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain-like receptors (NLRs) constitute a family of germline-encoded pattern-recognition receptors, which allow the host to respond rapidly to a wide variety of pathogenic microorganisms. Here, we discuss recent advances in the study of a subset of NLRs, which control the activation of caspase-1 through the assembly of large protein complexes, inflammasome...

Type III secretion system genes in clinical Aeromonas isolates.

We have identified the genes ascF and ascG, which encode components of a putative type III secretion system (TTSS) in AEROMONAS: We investigated the distribution of these and other TTSS genes in 84 clinical isolates and found hybridizing sequences in 50% of the strains, with a higher prevalence in Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas veronii than in Aeromonas caviae.

Critical role of ASC inflammasomes and bacterial type IV secretion system in caspase-1 activation and host innate resistance to Brucella abortus infection.

Pathogens are detected by innate immune receptors that, upon activation, orchestrate an appropriate immune response. Recent studies revealed the intracellular signaling cascades involved in the TLR-initiated immune response to Brucella abortus infection. However, no report has elucidated the role of inflammasome receptors in Brucella recognition. Therefore, we decided to investigate the functio...
